Elmbridge Youth Theatre are putting on a version of 'The Wizard of Oz' for late January at the Walton Playhouse.

A full professional orchestra will support a cast of 50 young people between Tuesday January 27 and Saturday 31.

Rehearsals are almost complete for the show, which is based on the 1939 movie starring Judy Garland.

History time

A talk on the history of Walton Bridge will be held in January at St James' Church.

Nick Pollard from Sunbury and Shepperton Local History Society will give a talk on January 19 at the next meeting of the Weybridge Society.

Admission is free to members and guests pay £1.

Elmbridge Council is holding SHOUT! events for kids during the October half-term break.

Children can choose which activity appeals to them the most with the Play Days at Ansell Hall, Walton, and there will be a choice of sports including coached sessions on offer at Xcel Leisure Centre in Waterside Drive, Walton.

Actors wanted for Wizard of Oz

walton-playhouse-31.jpgChildren aged eight to 12 are need to play munkins in a stage production of The Wizard of Oz.

Elmbridge Youth Theatre is staging the show - it's 34th production - at The Playhouse in Walton in January, and also wants to recruit young people aged 15 to 25.

Anyone who wants to step into the spotlight should go to Walton Youth Centre in Elm Grove on September 28. Eight to 12s should go to the 5pm meeting and everyone else to the meeting at 7.30pm. Further details call director Richard Davis on 01932 845855.

A late summer fete will take place at Apps Court Farm in Hurst Road on Saturday September 13.

Organised by the Caravan Club of West Surrey, the day will see raffles, tombolas, and refreshments, as well as clowns, cheerleader displays and falconry.

Tickets are £1 and all money raised will go towards charity Rapid Assistance for Potentially Terminally Ill Children in Kew.

Doors are open between 12-4pm.

Jazz in the barn

The Riverhouse Community Arts Centre in Manor Road will be hosting a number of jazz nights up to Christmas.

On September 21 The Art of Sound Trio will be performing at 7.30pm, on October 19 the Clark Tracey Quartet will be playing, and on November 29 jazz vocalist Anita Wardell will perform.

Prices for adults are £10 and £5 for students.

Teens bid for pop stardom

lauren-rammell-1-10.jpgTwo Elmbridge teenagers could be on their way to pop stardom after singing their way through to the regional final of a national talent show.

Lauren Rammell, 14, of Longmore Road, Hersham, and Rosie Cuthill, 17, of Silverdale Avenue, Walton, beat off 10,000 entrants to win a place in the next round of Idol 2008, a talent competition for singers and dancers.

A Walton club which teaches a rare form of martial arts needs to find 10 members for a new course by September 14.

Non-profit organisation Sendokan, who have a club in the Xcel Leisure Complex in Waterside Drive, are looking to start the course to bring awareness to Aikido, a philosophical Japanese martial art.

tim-brabants-2-27.jpgWalton's Olympic kayaking gold medallist Tim Brabants was given a warm welcome back to his home town on August 27.

Tim, 31, was cheered on by the Mayor of Elmbridge Cllr Nigel Cooper and the council's chief executive Robert Moran, who met the canoeist at Xcel Leisure Centre in Waterside Drive, Walton.
