Elmbridge Youth Theatre are putting on a version of 'The Wizard of Oz' for late January at the Walton Playhouse.

A full professional orchestra will support a cast of 50 young people between Tuesday January 27 and Saturday 31.

Rehearsals are almost complete for the show, which is based on the 1939 movie starring Judy Garland.

youth2.jpgWalton North's new beat bobby has come up with an innovative way to get teenagers off the streets - by teaching them how to make music.

PC Melanie Sefton has spent the last month taking six 14-15 year olds to Molesey Youth Centre, in Ray Road, West Molesey, where the teenagers have been using a £45,000 recording studio to make a song.

History time

A talk on the history of Walton Bridge will be held in January at St James' Church.

Nick Pollard from Sunbury and Shepperton Local History Society will give a talk on January 19 at the next meeting of the Weybridge Society.

Admission is free to members and guests pay £1.

The chairman of the management board at Wellington Close flats in Walton has said maintenance work is essential.

Martin Lincberg, who has been living in the flats for 32 years, has said the plans to replace the buildings' curtain cladding, which is made up of an old aluminium frame holding the glass windows, is in danger of disintegrating in the future if work is not carried out.

Chef goes tops

Burhill Golf Club's head chef has been awarded chef of the year by a golf lifestyle magazine.

Andrew Owen was given the prize at the Clubhouse Magazine Awards on September 22.

He was awarded with a china plaque for creating London standard cuisine, presentation, and service in the club's Orangery Restaurant.

New football ground opens

Hurst Park Juniors were given four pitches, goal posts, and flags by Apps Court Farm owner Stuart Macgregor for the three under 10 teams to play and train on.

Actors wanted for Wizard of Oz

walton-playhouse-31.jpgChildren aged eight to 12 are need to play munkins in a stage production of The Wizard of Oz.

Elmbridge Youth Theatre is staging the show - it's 34th production - at The Playhouse in Walton in January, and also wants to recruit young people aged 15 to 25.

Anyone who wants to step into the spotlight should go to Walton Youth Centre in Elm Grove on September 28. Eight to 12s should go to the 5pm meeting and everyone else to the meeting at 7.30pm. Further details call director Richard Davis on 01932 845855.

Tributes to opera-loving Jean

opera2.jpgJean Dyer, an opera loving mother of three, of The Furrows in Walton, died on September 3 of a heart infection.

The 69-year-old had suffered from a weak heart and was in an ambulance on her way to St Peter's Hospital in Chertsey suffering from shortness of breath when she died suddenly.

A late summer fete will take place at Apps Court Farm in Hurst Road on Saturday September 13.

Organised by the Caravan Club of West Surrey, the day will see raffles, tombolas, and refreshments, as well as clowns, cheerleader displays and falconry.

Tickets are £1 and all money raised will go towards charity Rapid Assistance for Potentially Terminally Ill Children in Kew.

Doors are open between 12-4pm.

Jazz in the barn

The Riverhouse Community Arts Centre in Manor Road will be hosting a number of jazz nights up to Christmas.

On September 21 The Art of Sound Trio will be performing at 7.30pm, on October 19 the Clark Tracey Quartet will be playing, and on November 29 jazz vocalist Anita Wardell will perform.

Prices for adults are £10 and £5 for students.
