Police bicycle marking at school
Officers from the Walton Central Safer Neighbourhood Team (SNT) visited Ashley Primary School in Walton-on-Thames last week and gave pupils the chance to help keep their bikes secure.
Police Constable Ian Harding, the Neighbourhood Specialist Officer for Walton Central, and Police Community Support Officer (PCSO) Toni Rowland held two sessions where youngsters had the opportunity to have their bikes marked.
More than 20 pupils, from Year Five up to Year Eight, brought their bicycles into school on Wednesday 8 October and officers were able to scribe the child's postcode on to the frame of the bicycle.
Each postcode is entered into a Surrey Police database which can then be used to quickly trace the owners of a bicycle if it is ever lost or stolen.
The youngsters were all rewarded for taking part with a Surrey Police sticker and toy.
PC Harding said: "It was a very enjoyable visit and I was delighted that we got such a positive reaction from the pupils.
"We got the chance to engage with the youngsters and build even stronger community relations whilst also providing a valuable security service.
"The children seemed very pleased to see us and several lucky pupils got to try on a Surrey Police hat.
"Bicycle security is always an issue for children and this visit represents just one of the many ways in which Surrey Police is listening to and supporting the community to target local concerns."
