Hero cop delivers baby in car
A police officer is being hailed a hero after saving the life of a baby he helped deliver in the back of a car.
PC Dan Wells was flagged down by Russian banker Mikhail Nadel, from Silverdale Avenue in Walton, who had been driving to the Portland Hospital in central London.
Mr Nadel's wife Natalia, 31, was in labour with their second child but it quickly became clear to the baby was not going to wait to make an entrance into the world.
Instead of offering the couple directions to the hospital, PC Wells found himself delivering the baby in the back of the Nadel's grey BMW on the side of the road in Fulham.
Mr Nadel, 39, chairman to the board of directors at Asia Universal Bank, said: "I stopped the car and told the men I need help for my wife and one of the policemen immediately started helping, but it all happened so fast.
"It was a horrible process because the umbilical cord was around the neck of the baby."
PC Wells, a response officer based in Hammersmith and Fulham, said: "I was about to have words with him about the way he was driving when he said his wife was having a baby.
"When I got there the head was out and it was kind of blue. The baby hadn't made a noise so I wondered what we were dealing with."
PC Wells unravelled the umbilical cord from around the baby's neck to allow it to breath while his colleague called an ambulance, and tragedy was averted.
Mr Nadel, who moved to Walton two years ago, said: "I was so happy he was there."
An ambulance arrived shortly after the birth and took mother and baby Nicole to hospital, where the 6lbs 8oz tot was declared fit and healthy.
PC Wells said: "I'm used to dealing with criminals, so it was a completely different experience for me to be faced with a woman in labour.
"It was an amazing experience and I am glad I was able to assist, but I think in future I will stick to catching criminals.
"I have visited Mum and baby in hospital and it is great to see they are both doing well."
Mr and Mrs Nedal are now looking forward to a traditional Russian Orthodox celebration when Nicole is 40 days old.
